stupid question, but what for you game must have to be consider roguelike?
Randomly generated loyout/map/items/npc and having permadeath and some lvl up/ advancing character

Tales Of Maj'Eyal aka (ToMe 4): this is probably little easier (at least at normal and nightmare settings), no more stupid potion of healing/mana. No one-use items. Many fun classes, many build for try. You can try mimic gameplay of class with another, so for some classes no one path of advancing. Tree-like skills.

SanctuaryRPG: make camp, start forging and forget about main quest :D Actually you can lvl up by crafting, probably not your typical roguelike.

One way heroic: Don't go back, just go forward. Will you be powerfull enough to take main boss, if you sometimes don't have time to collect loot or kill monsters.

Unepic (more like rogue-lite, no permadeath). You are RPG player of D&D, who ended up in fantasy world. You start with llighter, and no weapon :)

Ancient Domain of Mystery: my first roguelike, I like idea of sacrificing hostile monster on the altar, Mages are somewhat limited (let's say it really hard to cast spells on everything that moves) :) Without guides you will be suprised what game want from you sometimes. And this gremlins near fountains or other source of water :D

Others:
  • Risk of Rain
  • Rogue Legacy
  • Crypt of Necrodancer

Very interesting.

I didn't try any of this games yet, but I got plans for Tome4 and ADOM. Also I like ideas of "One way heroic" and "Unepic", would try them for sure.

Roguelike genre in my vision:

- very high freedom of actions (you could do a lot of stuff with items/enviroment)
- RNG (as much as it could be)
- permadeath
- hack'n'slash fighting system
- hardcore surviving (need to eat, a lot of possibilityies to die & etc)
- symbols/squares/tiles :) oldschool 2d graphics

Btw, did you play NetHack? Its one of my favorites ones ;) Loads of interesting opportunities to die lol

i play Nethack very long time ago. And only try tourist, and it was maybe hours or two max.

Oh i forgot about Furyband, it's clone/mod of tome 2 with Jedi and lightsaber ;) Yes it's still in Middle Earth.

I tried Angband few times, but RNG don't like me very much and in from bree to some other dungeon i find just bunch of Great Wyrm or other High lvl monster. I remember being one hit killed by them, so i just stick to Furyband :D

And Tales of Maj'Eyal is scary. I have more nearly 500h on steam and 1/4 of achievments  and i don't remember how many hours i have before i started playing on steam, but probably about half of steam. I started playing it probably around forties beta. It's nice to see how your fav class change between version.

And I have still quite few roguelikes/rogouelites on steam/gog which i didn't play. But probably i will try few now, when i don't have my dGPU and using only integrated graphic with processor. And i want finally finish Witcher saga…

I don't like Nethack and for the same reason all variants of ZAngband: too silly. My favorites:
- ADOM: most balanced/complete roguelike around (check the latest version, it rocks)
- Tales of May Eyal: this is not a roguelike anymore, more of a modern turn based game with skills and builds (think Divinity: Original sin)
- Sil: an Angband variant that forces you to think every move you make

I highly recommend DoomRL and its upcoming successor game, Jupiter Hell.

DoomRL is a fast paced shooter roguelike, with multiple difficulty settings and tons of ingame challenges and achievements. I expect more of the same from Jupiter Hell, and I've created a thread linking to the Kickstarter for it which is currently running, so feel free to check that out. DoomRL itself can be found here. It's a very different style and feel from TomeNET, but it's definitely worth checking out.

Ok, not the best, but recently played.

RymdResa is very short game let's say it have 3 main quests, but for unknown reason put in 3 chapters, and you don't have nice transition between chapters. Each chapter is in some way it's own game with it's own quest. In chapter 3 you have more quests, but don't be fooled, it's still one ;D (in my opinion at least). You have 3 bosses, but you don't fight with them, you talk to them. No fighting system at all, just avoid debris, enemy ships…
Don't bother with easy or normal mode, they are too easy. On this mode you don't loose your experience and equipment between flights.
I will say it's probably the less roguelike game which I play in a while.
One of additional quest is to get 25 lvl, is one of "basic". I complete the game twice and get only around 16 lvl.

You can wander in search of research pod or items, the game will wait for you. Don't need to rush for anything, enjoy space, visit planets, galaxies or pieces of broken spaceships, telescopes…
For plus it's have nice soundtrack, and it's have narration at each passing year in game.
It have probably weird bug if you play in weird resolution like me, the screen will after some damage move a little, so you can have some problems with picking items in inventory

Continue with games recently played, that have roguelike tag on Steam:
Risk of Rain
So no turns, highly randomised, lvl, are randomly generated, items from chest/shrines are randomly generated and it's some chances for nothing. To get items you must pay with gold, which you get from monster or some conteiners on lvl.
Basically it's 2d shooter with some classes which have 4 different abilities.
Bosses fight are tough, for 90 second after begining fight with boss the monsters spawn near your location with increased rate, so if you stay in one place for long time you will see a sea of monsters.
The longer you play, the tougher the monster become.
To process to next lvl you must slaughter all monster on lvl, so probably better to go as fastly as possible to start boss fight, fastly kill monster, get some items and process to next lvl
Terrain can put you to high advantage.
Easier to play on gamepad, than keyboard ;)
Game requires some agility and fast movement from player, for dodging monster attacks. Game don't require any sofisticating planning. Run to boss, kill mobs so they don't overrun you, process to next lvl repeat.

Could be quite fun to play on co-op :)
But this is not rogue-like. Or I have some hardcore definition of it. It give me quite similar feeling like Rogue Legacy, but change sword/magic to gun, and add mobs to boss fight.
